Some of the riders for the 2009 Cycling For Celiacs: Ottawa-Kemptville 105km Challenge
Help us raise funds for the Ottawa Cycling For Celiacs 100km Challenge taking place August 15th.
As part of our participation we are required to raise a minimum of $200 with net proceeds from the project to be divided between the JA Campbell research fund and the Ottawa Chapter.

What is Cycling For Celiacs?
- Cycling for Celiacs is an annual event that offers everyone an opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of riding their bicycle while helping those with Celiac Disease by collecting pledges and donations in support of research, support and service.
What is the J.A. Campbell Research Fund?
- The J.A. Campbell Research Fund gives two Canadian Celiac Association research awards annually.
- Dr. J.A. Campbell Young Investigators Award for Research in Celiac Disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis
- J.A. Campbell Research Fund: Grants in Aid of Research in Celiac Disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis in Canada
What is Celiac Disease?
- Celiac Disease is a medical condition in which the absorptive surface of the small intestine is damaged by a substance called gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats).
- Celiac Disease affects 1 in 133 people
- Celiac Disease affects twice as many women as men
- Celiac Disease may be the third most common inherited disorder in North America
- Celiac disease can develop at any time in a person’s life
- Celiac Disease symptoms vary from person to person and often goes undiagnosed and doctors often label a person as having IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
- Celiac Disease left untreated can be life threatening, from increased risk of various types of cancer (especially intestinal lymphoma), osteoporosis, tooth enamel defects, central and peripheral nervous system disease, pancreatic disease, internal hemorrhaging, organ disorders (gall bladder, liver, and spleen), and gynecological disorders.
- Celiac Disease has no known cure, but can usually be effectively treated and controlled.
- Celiac Disease can only be treated by following strict adherence to a Gluten Free Diet for LIFE
