Bomba Estéreo, a musical project formed by Simón Mejía and singer Liliana Saumet in 2005, manages to combine folk music from the country’s Atlantic coast such as cumbia and bullerenge with lounge, hip hop, and champeta in what the group dubs as psychedelic cumbia. Their sound ends up being a reworking of Colombian tradition with modern urban sensibilites, using lyrics that allude to spoiled rich brats as well as to the Carnaval de Barranquilla.
Bomba Estéreo’s second album Blow Up will make you forget everything you know about Colombian popular music. Erase Juanes from your playlist. Bury Shakira CDs in a ditch. Blow Up is everything that Colombian pop should sound like: an amalgam of influences that still retains enough originality and danceability to knock you off your seats.
